In her life, Casey has become fluent in a range of seemingly contrasting languages. She speaks maths and art, accounting and humanities. She’s a great mum and a brilliant Senior Accountant.

Casey has lived in Bundy for 10 years and is coming up on nine years with Ulton.

A part of the Business Services team, Casey does a lot of work in tax compliance. She works with some of the firm’s larger client groups – assisting them with their financials, tax returns, FBT returns, BAS, and supporting them with her expert advice.

“Numbers have always just been a language that I understood. I’m one of six kids, and we’re all maths-heads. From day dot all of us just ‘got it’. Which was a shock to my mum, because she is not that way at all,” Casey said.

Casey’s impressive left-brain is equally matched with her right-brain.

Before pursuing accounting, Casey did a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in Archaeology and Anthropology.

“I have always loved learning about other cultures and people, I find it fascinating,” she said.

“I am a very practical person, but at the same time, I have a bit of an artistic inclination too.”

While traditional thinking often pits mathematics and the arts against one another, Casey sees plenty of common ground between the two.

“I have always loved research and the process of working through problems and asking ‘Why?”, she said.

And the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

Casey’s son, Eli (12) and daughter, Darcy (9), both have their Mum’s gift for numbers and her creative flair.

“I love seeing my kids be creative,” Casey said.

When we spoke to Casey, it was in the lead-up to the Bundaberg Show’s cake competition, which Darcy was determined to enter.

Casey was helping Darcy realise her vision for a nature-inspired cake, decorated with lily pads and complete with tiny mushrooms, each with a little mushroom face.*

“As a kid, I really loved baking. It feels really special to now get to share that with my daughter,” she said.

There’s no doubt about it – family is everything to Casey. Which is why her working arrangement with Ulton works so well.

Casey typically works Monday to Friday, during school hours. Most of her afternoons are jam-packed with carting Darcy and Eli to their extracurricular activities, sport, homework, and making sure to get some quality time with them before the day’s out.

“Ulton has been amazing at being flexible and accommodating. They really work with you to get the best outcome for you and your family. It makes all the difference,” Casey said.

“I really enjoy working from the Bundaberg office, too. I really appreciate that there’s always something social happening across the business that you can join in on,” she said.

A self-confessed introvert, crowds aren’t Casey’s favourite thing in the world, but she does love chatting one-on-one with other team members across Ulton, and learning more about their stories.

“When there’s a grand social event going on, you’ll probably see me using the break times to steal a moment away with my phone in my hand. I’m not texting – I’m reading!” she said.

“I took my niece to a concert a few weeks back and at one point, I looked over and she was reading a novel that she’d snuck in with her! I just laughed. Clearly, we have the same DNA – I do the same thing,” she said, laughing.

Casey is another person to add to the growing list of Ulton’s bibliophiles. Just last month, we chatted to our Quality Assurance Officer, Donna Doss, who just like Casey, loves nothing more than a good novel.

Ulton book club, anyone?

* ARTICLE UPDATE - Since writing this article, Casey has shared a little update about Darcy's show entry cake. "The fondant wasn’t playing nice so Darcy had to forgo the little mushroom faces. The cake turned out super cute anyway. She entered in the Under 16 Decorated Cakes section and came third!!! We are so proud of her and her efforts and are already looking forward to what she creates next year."

Congrats Darcy! 👏
